Please help! I cannot access my external drive.

Dear CNET members,

Happy Friday! Every time I come across a forum question similar to Virginia's--where their external hard drive is either inaccessible or corrupt, it just breaks my heart, especially when the member mentions they don't have a backup. So I before go on, I cannot stress how important it is to back up your data! I personally have two external hard drives backing up my important data on my computer and even DVD-Rs to back up those. Call it paranoid, but I know if one fails, another medium will be there to save me. If you are prepared for the worst, you shouldn't find yourself in these types of situations. With that said, if you haven't backed up your data, do it immediately. Now, let's move on to the topic.

Well, Virginia, I'm sorry to hear about your situation. As you read through the helpful advice from our members on the different approaches to get your external hard drive readable again, I would highly recommend starting with tasks that are easily accomplishable by yourself first and work your way up to the more complicated ones. So where do you start, you ask? I would start with member yasinghMD's answer and has graciously taken many of the answers from our members and put them in an ordered list from easy to more complicated tasks. With these given tasks, I will advise, that at any given point in which you are not comfortable doing it, please stop and have an experienced or professional persona look into it. While no method provided by our members or even professional services are guaranteed to recover data completely, a word of advice from member High Desert Charlie: "Never give up on retrieving your data before a qualified professional who you trust tells you it can't be saved. I've run into many circumstances where customers have been told their hard drives were trashed, and been able to completely restore the data."

With that in mind, I've selected a few answers to get you all going in the Q&A section, but please read everyone's advice. Again, as a reminder to all you folks, back up your data and do it frequently, so you won't have to go through this. Take care, everyone, and thank you all for your wonderful contributions to the question. Good luck, Virginia, and if you have a chance, let us know what worked out for you! Have an awesome weekend and happy Valentine's Day!

(For those members who haven't participated in our newsletter topics, here's your chance to contribute. Read next week's questions from Ronald and help him out with his college project and answer his survey. There is no right or wrong answer. Thanks!)

Cheers!
- Lee

Last week's question
Please help! I cannot access my external drive.
QuestionHi, I really need help with this problem! 18 months ago I bought a WD external hard drive to run with my desktop computer and laptop, both run XP. At first both machines recognised the drive as soon as I would plug the usb in, although with a warning that it would run at lower performance because my usb ports were not 2.0 ports but that was okay. I wanted it to put all my music, photos, data files etc on, to save storage on my computers, so I would plug it in and when it would ask me what I wanted to do I just select 'view files and folders' (after I had saved all my music, photos, documents etc to it) or otherwise would transfer things onto it.

The past few months when I have plugged it in, my computers go through reading that there is a device, trying to open it, and I see the grey rectangular box with those green squares going left to... Read more

Check out next week's question:
Why are computers still so difficult to use?
Next week's questionHi, Lee, I know this is not the technical question you normally receive, but I was hoping you can have your community members help me out in a big way.

As a final year college student I need to carry out an independent project looking at an issue in the domain of my subject. I chose the question, "Why are computers still so difficult to use?" To start my project I compiled several questions to explore experiences of computer users (see below). A summary of what I am wanting to look at are competency levels of users with computers, how they got into using them, the time they?ll spend on them in a day, their challenges and how they manage them, their happiness in using them, their thoughts on the increasing functionality/pervasiveness of computers...
