There are several reasons why OS X may not accept start-up arguments, though sometimes the reasons can be bizarre and unexpected.

Sometimes small, unexpected errors can cause the OS X Finder to display icons in odd ways. Here are some general steps on how to clear icon display problems.
A number of iCal and MobileMe users are noticing an issue in which alarms set a week in advance result in iCal giving a "403 Forbidden" error.
