Unfortunately, it's not a happy Friday as Japan was hit with a huge earthquake, which spawned a devastating tsunami. After watching some online videos, I thought to myself how fragile we are against Mother Nature. My heartfelt condolences to those who lost family and friends in this tragic event, and my thoughts are with all those who are affected.

After reading all the answers to Mark's issue, it looks like it's a fairly common problem for XP systems to not recognize disc drives in the system. As member waytron pointed out, it's usually caused by installing or uninstalling iTunes or some other application that uses the optical drives. The good news is there are solutions to this issue. Many members have brought up one by Microsoft that is fairly straightforward. There is also a manual way to fix it, which requires a bit of tinkering with the system registry. Please be advised to take special care when editing the registry as one simple mistake can be devastating. For any solution, be sure to back up your data, set a system restore point, and be careful. If the Microsoft solution doesn't work for you, there are other recommendations provided by our members, so have a read through them all. I'm sure one of them will make it right.  Hi guys! My PC (Windows XP) has lost sight of its disc drives. Both have power and will pop out to receive a disc if you press the button on the front. Device manager recognizes their existence showing Combo ATA/EDE232CO, LITE-ON DVDRW SHM-165565--each with a yellow backed exclamation mark.
When I connect an external disc drive via a USB socket, device manager sees it and shows it also with the yellow backed pling. Other items, (memory stick, scanner, printer) all work normally. The disc drivers fail to appear on the "My Computer" page. I have downloaded new drivers from the Web but this has made no difference. I can't associate the failure with any particular event but I did try a "clean up program" at some stage that could possibly be involved. Obviously I can't reload any programs since my discs are not accessible so I am completely stuck and beginning to suspect hardware. I am well into my retirement years and not computer literate but before I take it back to the shop I would like to know if there is any solution I could apply myself. Anybody help? Kind regards.
