Happy Friday! I hope this newsletter finds everyone well! Before we get going on this week's topic, I want to point you to a note of thanks from Robert, who many of you helped graciously last week when he wrote: "My computer has fallen asleep and it won't wake up!" It's always great to hear back from members who've benefitted from forum help. Now let's get started to see if there is a solution for Cynthia, who wants to get rid of her duplicate files from multiple hard drives.
Cynthia, I'm glad to see that you are backing up your data. The good news is, your fellow members have come through with a bunch of recommendations for utilities (some free, some paid) that you can use to find duplicate and even triplicate files. The only hard part is trying to figure which one to use. A couple that were mentioned several times were Comodo System Cleaner and Glary Utilities (which both can be found at CNET Download.com; each has gotten pretty good CNET editor and member reviews).
One word of caution to any of you who are going down the path of using a utility to remove duped files: since we are talking about searching duplicates and eliminating them from your backups, you don't want to take any chance of deleting anything that is not duplicated. So please be careful; you may even want to consider taking all your data and combining it onto an additional backup hard drive, and then proceed with the task of eliminating the dupes out of the other drives. I know it's a bit much, but you can never be too careful. And if all goes well, then you can recycle that additional backup drive for future use. If anyone has additional advice to offer on how to eliminate duplicate files from hard drives, speak up in this week's discussion. Thanks everyone for your contributions.  Is there a program that will go through both internal and external hard drives to display those files that are duplicated, triplicated, etc.? Unfortunately, I now have several copies of computer backups on my current computer due to former computer issues on other computers. I did not have time to go through all the documents to see if one system had documents updated within files that another may not have. I believe I have three other backups of my former computers on my system now, which does use a lot of memory, but it is also not an efficient use of storage. Now, I have an external hard drive that has backed up all documents and pictures on its hard drive, which means it, too, has the additional backups on it. I want to "clean house"! I'm running a Windows Vista Home system. Thank you for your assistance.

 Hi guys! My PC (Windows XP) has lost sight of its disc drives. Both have power and will pop out to receive a disc if you press the button on the front. Device manager recognizes their existence showing Combo ATA/EDE232CO, LITE-ON DVDRW SHM-165565--each with a yellow backed exclamation mark.
When I connect an external disc drive via a USB socket, device manager sees it and shows it also with the yellow backed pling. Other items, (memory stick, scanner, printer) all work normally. The disc drivers fail to appear on the "My Computer" page. I have downloaded new drivers from the Web but this has made no difference. I can't associate the failure with any particular event but I did try a "clean up program" at some stage that could possibly be involved. Obviously I can't reload any programs since my discs are not accessible so I am completely stuck and beginning to suspect hardware. I am well into my retirement years and not computer literate but before I take it back to the shop I would like to know if there is any solution I could apply myself. Anybody help? Kind regards.
