The social network's new Open Compute Project allows industry peers to access the design and power specifications of the large data centers and servers Facebook uses at its Prineville, Ore., location.

The browser-based operating system is headed for touch-screen tablets. But Chrome OS competes not just with Apple's iPad, but also Google's own Android OS for tablets.
